Lifting & Material Handling Procedure – Telehandler
Pre-use checks
-
Complete the manufacturer's daily/pre-use inspection.
-
Confirm the operator is trained, competent and authorised.
-
Check the telehandler, forks and any fitted attachment for visible damage or defects.
-
Confirm the correct attachment is fitted and secured.
-
Confirm the load weight before lifting.
-
Check the applicable load chart for the machine configuration, required radius/reach and lifting height.
-
Check ground conditions and the planned travel route.
-
Confirm the load is stable, adequately packaged and suitable for handling.
-
Do not operate where a defect could affect safe operation.
The source specifically requires confirmation of load weight before lifting and checking the load chart for the required reach and height.
Set up the working area
-
Establish a controlled working area.
-
Segregate pedestrians from the telehandler operating zone.
-
Use barriers/exclusion zones where required.
-
Check for blind spots and restricted visibility.
-
Agree signalling arrangements where the operator cannot maintain a clear view.
-
Confirm the travel route is suitable and clear of obstructions.
This closely follows the training material, including pedestrian segregation and agreed signalling where visibility is restricted.
Unloading delivery vehicles
-
Position the telehandler on suitable firm ground.
-
Secure the delivery vehicle against unintended movement before unloading.
-
Check that the load has not shifted before restraints are removed.
-
Inspect pallets, packaging and materials before lifting.
-
Keep personnel clear of the unloading area.
-
Approach the load squarely and engage the forks correctly.
-
Lift only sufficiently to clear the vehicle/load supports.
-
Place materials onto a firm, level and suitable storage area.
These points are directly supported by the telehandler script.
Travelling with loads
-
Travel with the boom lowered and the load in the manufacturer's specified travel position.
-
Do not travel with an unnecessarily raised load.
-
Maintain a speed suitable for the ground, load and site conditions.
-
Avoid sudden braking, acceleration and sharp turns.
-
Maintain adequate visibility.
-
Where the load restricts visibility, use the agreed site control/signalling arrangements.
-
Keep pedestrians outside the machine's operating area.
Your source specifically warns that travelling with a raised load increases overturning risk.
Placing loads at height
-
Confirm the load weight, required reach and placement height.
-
Check the applicable telehandler load chart before commencing.
-
Follow the manufacturer's stabiliser/outrigger requirements where applicable.
-
Use only a suitable designated loading area.
-
Ensure suitable edge/fall protection is provided.
-
Establish an exclusion zone below and around the raised load.
-
No person is permitted beneath a raised load.
-
Place the load slowly and under controlled conditions.
-
Withdraw the forks only after the load is fully supported and stable.
The training notes specifically flag the loading-bay/edge-protection arrangement as an area requiring confirmation before the animation is used as instruction.
Long materials & pipe frames
-
Use handling equipment suitable for the material being moved.
-
Support long loads adequately.
-
Keep the full length of the load clear of personnel and structures.
-
Place cylindrical materials on suitable supports to prevent rolling or sliding.
-
Never use hands or feet to steady a moving load.
-
Check proprietary storage frames for condition and rated capacity before handling.
-
Follow the frame manufacturer's handling instructions.
-
Do not exceed the manufacturer's permitted handling angle or position.
-
Stop if the load or contents become unstable or begin to shift.
This is important because your review notes identify the pipe-frame tilt as something that cannot be verified as acceptable from the animation alone. The narration therefore correctly treats it as a potential shifting-load hazard rather than declaring the movement safe.
Safety Tips & Best Practices
General
-
Operators must be trained, competent and authorised.
-
Follow the project-specific RAMS, Lift Plan where applicable, and site traffic management arrangements.
-
Follow the telehandler and attachment manufacturer's instructions.
-
Never exceed the machine's rated capacity for the actual configuration, reach and height.
-
Maintain effective pedestrian/plant segregation.
Before lifting
-
Know the load weight.
-
Check the correct load chart.
-
Confirm the attachment and machine configuration.
-
Check load stability and packaging.
-
Check ground conditions and travel route.
-
Establish the required exclusion zone.
-
Confirm visibility and communication arrangements.
During operation
-
Keep loads as low as reasonably practicable and in the manufacturer's specified travel position.
-
Avoid sudden movements and sharp turns.
-
Keep pedestrians outside the operating area.
-
Never allow anyone beneath a raised load.
-
Stop if visibility is lost.
-
Do not use personnel to manually steady a moving load.
-
Reassess the operation if the load, ground conditions, route or visibility changes.
Loading & storage
-
Place loads only on suitable, stable supports.
-
Maintain safe access around storage areas.
-
Prevent pipes or cylindrical materials from rolling.
-
Confirm trailers/decks can support the intended load.
-
Distribute loads appropriately.
-
Secure loads and frames against movement before transport.
-
Keep hands clear when withdrawing forks.
After use
-
Park in the designated area.
-
Lower the forks/attachment to the ground.
-
Apply the parking brake and isolate the machine in accordance with manufacturer instructions.
-
Report defects or damage.
-
Leave the machine in a safe condition.
⚠️ Disclaimer
This procedure is provided for general safety guidance only.
All telehandler operations must be carried out in accordance with the project-specific Risk Assessment and Method Statement (RAMS), Lift Plan where applicable, site traffic management arrangements and the telehandler and attachment manufacturer's instructions.
The telehandler, forks and any attachment must be inspected and confirmed suitable before use. Load weight, machine configuration, lifting height and reach must be established before lifting and checked against the applicable manufacturer's load chart.
Only trained, competent and authorised personnel may operate the telehandler or control lifting/material-handling operations.
All work must comply with applicable UK legislation and project requirements, including:
LOLER 1998, where applicable to the lifting operation
PUWER 1998
CDM Regulations 2015
Manufacturer instructions and applicable UK construction guidance
This guidance does not replace manufacturer instructions, project-specific RAMS, Lift Plans or operator training.
Important: Some attachments or suspended-load operations may require a separate Lift Plan and additional lifting accessories, inspection/certification and control measures.
