Lifting & Installation Procedure – Prefab Steel Column

  • Pre-Lift Inspection
    • Visually inspect lifting chains, hook block, and lifting accessories for any signs of damage, wear, deformation, or defects.
    • Ensure all lifting gear is certified, correctly rated, and free from twists or kinks.
    • Confirm exclusion zones are established and the lifting area is clear of personnel.

  • Attaching the Chains
    • Connect the four-leg chain sling to the prefab steel column using the designated lifting points.
    • Ensure all hooks are correctly attached to the double crown ties, as indicated by the steel fixer.
    • Check all connections are secure before applying tension to the load.

  • Pre-Lift Checks
    • Check the identification tag and confirm all lifting ties are secure.
    • Maintain clear communication between the slinger signaller and crane operator before starting the lift.
    • Ensure unused chain legs are secured back to the master link where applicable.

  • Initial Lift & Balance Check
    • Slowly raise the column to confirm the load is balanced and stable.
    • Use a tag line to control load swing and maintain full control during lifting operations.

  • Lowering Into Position
    • Carefully lower the prefab steel column into position under full control.
    • Operatives must stay clear of the suspended load at all times.
    • Prevent anyone from walking underneath the suspended column.

  • Securing the Column
    • Once in position, the steel fixer must tie and secure all reinforcement bars before removing the lifting chains.
    • Confirm the column is stable and secure prior to disconnecting lifting accessories.

    • Never use damaged, worn, or uncertified lifting gear.
    • Visually inspect chains, hooks, and lifting points before every lift.

  • Communication During Lifting

  • Suspended Loads
    • Never stand or walk underneath a suspended load.
    • Maintain safe distances while lowering or positioning the column.

  • Removing Chains
    • Keep visual contact with the chains while hoisting them away from the load.
    • Ensure chain hooks do not become caught on reinforcement bars or steel elements during removal.
