Lifting & Installation Procedure – Brick Fork Cage
-
Check the brick fork cage, lifting chains, and shackles for damage, distortion, or cracks.
– Ensure all lifting accessories have valid certification and are free from visible wear or corrosion.
– Confirm the cage door, hinges, and latch mechanisms are functioning correctly. -
Attach correct lifting accessories
– Use a certified single-leg chain sling attached to the designated lifting eye.
– Inspect the chain and hook latch before connection.
– Back-hook any unused chain legs to the master ring to prevent snagging. -
Test lift for balance
– Raise the cage slightly to check that the connection is secure and the cage remains level.
– Adjust if there is any uneven lift or twisting. -
Load and secure pallet
– Open the gate and guide the fork carefully under the pallet.
– Lift and position the pallet inside the cage, ensuring it is stable and level.
– Pull the fork out and insert it into the cage fork pockets, then close and secure the gate. -
Lift and control safely
– Use a tag line to guide and control the cage during lifting and lowering.
– Keep all personnel clear of the load and exclusion zone.
– Move the cage slowly and steadily to the desired location. -
Unload safely
– Lower the cage onto stable, level ground.
– Open the gate and remove the pallet with the fork.
– Replace the fork in the cage pockets, close the gate, and send the cage back for the next lift.
Safety Tips & Best Practices
-
Before Lifting
-
Only trained and authorised personnel should operate or attach lifting accessories.
-
Carry out a full visual inspection of the cage, lifting chains, shackles, and tag lines before every use.
-
Ensure all lifting accessories are within their inspection date and have valid certification.
-
Confirm the cage is positioned on firm, level ground, clear of obstructions.
-
Verify the pallet load does not exceed the Working Load Limit (WLL) of the cage or crane forks.
-
During Attachment
-
Always attach the single-leg chain to the designated lifting eye on the cage.
-
Make sure the hook latch is fully closed and the connection is seated correctly.
-
Back-hook any unused chain legs to the master ring to prevent snagging.
-
Keep hands, feet, and loose clothing away from pinch points and moving parts.
-
During Lifting
-
Perform a short test lift to check stability and balance before proceeding to full height.
-
Use tag lines at all times to guide and control the cage movement, especially in windy conditions.
-
Maintain clear communication between the slinger/signaller and crane operator throughout the lift.
-
Never stand beneath a suspended load or within the exclusion zone.
-
During Lowering and Unloading
-
Lower the cage slowly and under full control to prevent impact or tipping.
-
Ensure the landing area is stable, level, and free from debris.
-
Keep tag lines in use until the cage is fully landed.
-
Wait until the cage is stable before opening the gate or removing the pallet.
-
After Use
-
Check the cage for any damage or wear after each lift.
-
Clean and store lifting accessories properly to prevent corrosion or contamination.
-
Report any defects immediately and remove damaged gear from service.
-
Always follow the manufacturer’s maintenance regime and inspection intervals (recommended every 6 months).
